PH tiger prawn production recovers in 2015
Tiger prawn or sugpo production recovered in 2015, growing by 3.5 percent to 49,630 metric tons from 47,970 metric tons in 2014, the Philippine Statistical Authority reported.
Tiger prawn production dipped by 3.25 percent in 2014 but bucked the trend in the fisheries sector in 2015.
The fisheries sector fell by 1.96 percent last year with only tiger prawn and seaweed production reporting higher output.
In the fourth quarter of 2015, however, tiger prawn production dropped by a quarter of a percent to 15,910 metric tons from 15,950 metric tons in the same period in 2014. The PSA blamed the drop in the fourth quarter to typhoon Lando which caused brackish water fishponds in Pangasinan to overflow.
Farm gate prices of tiger prawns averaged close to P420 per kilo in 2015, four percent higher than the P403 per kilo reported in 2014. In the fourth quarter of 2015, farm gate prices of tiger prawns averaged at P416 per kilo, higher than the P405 per kilo reported in the same period in 2014. (By: Eileen A. Mencias)
