Pinay honored as Asia’s Best Female Chef 2016

Add Chef Margarita “Gaita” Fores to the list of Pinays who are bringing Pinoy pride to the forefront of the world.

The Filipina chef, who impressed the world with her version of the kinilaw in the Madrid Fusion last year, was chosen as Asia’s Best Female Chef 2016 by the prestigious Asia’s 50 best Restaurant Awards.

“I think that this will help put the spotlight on Filipino food and the local dining scene. I hope, too, that this serves as an inspiration for others in the industry to work harder and work further to get our cuisine out there.

It’s our time. It’s been noted that Filipino cuisine is one of the trends of 2016. This is proof that we are getting there,” she said in an interview with the Manila Bulletin.

The chef, who admitted to being overwhelmed by the honor added that the recognition was unexpected and that the news was “mind-blowing.”

Chef Gaita, who famously cooked for world leaders who attended the recently concluded Asia Pacific Economic Conference Summit in Manila.

The chef, who is known in the local scene for founding restaurants like Cibo, Lusso and most recently Grace Park and Alta at the Ascott Hotel in Bonifacio Global City, is the first Filipina to be honored by the award giving body.

In a statement to the Philippine Star, she said that she felt like she won the Miss Universe pageant when she learned that she won.

“I feel like Miss Universe. Don’t take it away, later na,” she joked.

Fores is set to receive the award on February 29 in Bangkok, Thailand. (ANGEL ONG)
