Agri chief declares cloud seeding successful
Agriculture secretary Proceso Alcala said cloud seeding operations being conducted in Mindanao has been successful, adding that some areas are now getting much needed rain.
Speaking to farmers and fishermen in Pampanga on March 1, 2015 for an El Nino summit and a dialogue with stakeholders, Alcala said “sa Mindanao po, matagumpay ang ipinapatupad nating cloud seeding sa pakikipagtulungan ng Local Government.
Sa katunayan po, may mga nararanasan ng pag-ulan sa ilang lalawigan doon. (In Mindanao, the cloud seeding operations we are conducting with the local government has been successful. In fact, some provinces have been experiencing rains).”
Alcala said cloud seeding sorties are regularly conducted in some provinces to induce rain. Just this week, the agriculture department invited some companies to submit proposals for cloud seeding operations.
“We are providing assistance to you to help you recover from your losses and enable you to continue your production, but we are also looking for viable long-term solutions to this dilemma,” Alcala said during the summit organized by regional offices of the agriculture department and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
The summit aims to better equip farmers and fishermen and cushion the impact of climate change on the agriculture sector.
During the event, Alcala also led the turn over ceremonies for projects under the national government’s bottoms-up budgeting program and the P53.1-million assistance package for farmers and fishermen.
Various farming and fishing equipment and facilities were also raffled off to farmers and fisher folks who attended.
Two hand tractors with trailer, 12 heads carabaos with plow and harrow, 50 bags of urea, 15 grass cutters, five knapsack sprayers, 15 transistor radios, and 10 x 30,000 tilapia fingerlings were also given away. (By: Eileen A. Mencias)
