Benguet trading facility underutilized
The Benguet Agri-Pinoy Trading Center in La Trinidad is ready for full operation and trading by vegetable farmers, agriculture officials said.
The Philippine Information Agency reported that DA-CAR Regional Director Lorenzo Caranguian said the BAPTC has been operating since its soft launching last October.
Caranguian said the facility’s capacity is 120 metric tons of vegetables per day but it only averaged 36 metric tons per day.
He explained that many farmers are still hesitant to trade in the P600-million facility, which includes parking, spot trading, trimming, cleaning and processing of produce, and solid waste handling.
The trading center also has a bank, dormitory, cafeteria and lounge.
Caranguian said DA-CAR officials have been conducting information dissemination to encourage the use of the facility.
A bypass road to the facility, which is erected at a 5.5-hectare land of the Benguet State University, is being constructed.
The trading center serves as an alternative marketing outlet where vegetable farmers can directly sell their produce at rationalized prices.
President Aquino is expected to inaugurate the facility when he goes to Baguio City for the Philippine Military Academy graduation on March 13.
