Cebu can be a major food producer: Alcala
Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said Cebu, known in the world for mangoes, has the potential to be a major food producer.
Alcala made the pronouncement during a farmers’ and fisherfolk’s forum in Maguklay, Mandaue City on Thursday.
Data from the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) showed that Cebu’s agriculture sector contributes 25 percent in the province’s economic growth.
Cebu is one of the biggest producers of high value vegetables, sweet corn, cut flowers and mangoes, among others.
Alcala encouraged local farmers to engage in the government’s agriculture and fishery programs, which aims to increase production and the income of farmers. He assured them of the full support of the agri-fishery sector.
He said they should become leaders who think of plans and programs for the organizations.
He also said Cebu needs to focus on marketing of its agricultural products and avail of government facilities such as the Agri-Pinoy Trading Center (APTC).
Last year, Alcala opened the P16-million Dalaguete APTC to serve as a trading hub for various farm produce from Matalongon and nearby communities.
