DA tests organic ways to raise farm produce
A Department of Agriculture experiment station in Quirino province is trying to find new farming technologies to improve production for rice, corn, high value commercial crops and livestock at lower cost, but using the organic way.
The Philippine Information Agency reported that among the organic technologies being tested on corn production are contour farming, polyculture and organic agriculture.
PIA quoted Engr. Rolando Pedro, project manager, as saying that the state of the mountains in Nagtipunan town, where the methods are being applied, has become alarming due to upland corn planting and aggravated by the rampant use of glyphosate.
Pedro said techno-demos are being held for farmers and farmers’ organizations on how to increase yield while reducing production cost.
He said the practice would hopefully make them readier for Asean integration.
He said farmers are encouraged to attend the trainings and to bring samples of their soils for testing.
