Dry spell destroys P4.769B in crops
The dry spell due to the El Niño has damaged P4.769 billion worth of crops, the Department of Agriculture (DA) reported.
The DA said the drought destroyed 349,620 metric tons of crops and affected 121,490 farmers.
Corn fields suffered the biggest loss at P2.68 billion while damage to rice fields reached P2 billion.
High-value crops recorded losses amounting to P21.6 million.
The DA said irrigation intervention, crop shifting, rehabilitation of vulnerable areas, and information campaign have been implemented.
It said irrigation augmentation for small-scale irrigation projects reached P96.5 million.
Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said cloud seeding in affected areas were successful.
