First PH halal rice exported to Gulf countries
SL Agritech Corp. (SLAC) is preparing to export the first halal rice in the Philippines to the world, starting with the Gulf countries.
The Manila Times reported that SLAC’s Dona Maria rice variety will be initially exported to Jordan and Kuwait within the first half of the year.
SLAC has doubled its export volume of Doña Maria premium rice to Dubai and Saudi Arabia over the last two years, even without a halal certification.
From three containers per year, SLAC has exported seven containers to Dubai as of March, and two containers to Saudi, said Liza Guinto, SLAC vice-president for export, in the Times report.
With the halal certification, SLAC is looking at more imports to the Gulf Cooperation Countries.
Guinto told the Times that expansion will go beyond the oil-rich Gulf countries.
“Our new export division has appointed two managers — one handling the United States and the Middle East and, another, Europe, Southeast Asia, and other countries,” she said.
