Learn to mechanize for Asean integration: DA chief
Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said farmers should learn to mechanize to be more competitive with their counterparts in Southeast Asia.
Alcala, during a forum with farmers, fisherfolk and agricultural extension workers at the Central Philippines University in Iloilo City, brought up the need to brace for the full integration of Asean members countries.
He said 15 percent of the 2016 budget on agriculture or P1.5 billion is allocated for mechanization and the 2017 budget is being prepared to factor in mechanization to increase production while minimizing cost.
During the forum, Alcala turned over P35.2 million worth of farm machineries including hand tractors, tillers, pump and engine sets, sprayers, four-wheel drive tractors, and harvesters.
Also committed to be given were native chicken pullets, goats, rice seeds, garden tools, and vegetable seeds.
