Losses due to El Niño reaches P5.32B

Agricultural losses to El Niño have reached P5.32 billion, with the corn suffering the biggest blow to the tune of P2.9 billion.

The Department of Agriculture said the figures represent production loss of 358.8 thousand metric tons in 237,000 hectares of agriculture lands planted to rice, corn, and high value crops, and devoted to raising livestock.

Next to corn, rice suffered the most losses of P2.38 billion.

A state of calamity was declared Friday in Butuan, Zamboanga, General Santos cities and in the provinces of Bukidnon, North Cotabato, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental, Maguindanao, and Guimaras due to the effects of the El Niño.

Government has distributed hybrid seeds, crop insurance, green super rice seeds, yellow corn seeds, vaccines and antibiotics

Aside from cloud seeding, the DA has constructed small water impounding projects (SWIP) and diversion dams; and improved irrigation canals, shallow tube well, and pump irrigation systems.
