Pineapple now one of PH’s top 10 exports
Philippine pineapple exports grew the fastest in January, allowing it to break into the top 10 exports of the country.
According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, Philippine exports of pineapples jumped by 91 percent to $61 million in January, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported.
Pineapple and other pineapple product exports accounted for 1.5 percent of the country’s total exports in January.
Bigger production resulting from the expansion of corporate farms in Bukidnon and the resumption of planting of Sumifru Philippines Corp. in Sultan Kudarat allowed for the increase in shipments.
The Philippines also hosts the world’s largest fully-integrated pineapple operation. Del Monte Philippines Inc. has a 23,000-hectare pineapple plantation with a cannery that has a capacity of 700,000 tons that has its own port.
Del Monte Philippines Inc. is a subsidiary of Del Monte Pacific Limited that owns the Del Monte and S&W brands.
Aside from its canned pineapples, Del Monte Pacific sells fresh pineapples under the S&W brand.
