Poe’s fisheries plan: Man-made reefs, fish polvoron
If she becomes president, Sen. Grace Poe said she will push for the rehabilitation of reefs and the stricter enforcement of national and local fishing boundaries in order to increase fishermen’s catch.
Poe, in an open forum at the UP Visayas campus in Iloilo, said it is ironic that the Philippines is an archipelago but fishermen are among the poorest members of society.
The survey frontrunner said under her presidency, there will be more artificial reefs and marine zones that would be cordoned off for a year or so in order to let the fish multiply.
She said from the experience of Zamboanga Sibugay, a catch of four kilos becomes 11 to 14 kilos after fishing grounds are rested.
She also said municipal waters must be respected by commercial fishers, and only the proper fishing gear must be used.
To strengthen enforcement, she said governors of the coastal areas should come up with an agreement that they will have marine sanctuaries.
For raise the fishermen’s wives, Poe said their incomes could be supplemented by making fish byproducts like dried fish.
“Ngayon ko lang narinig, mayroon palang polvoron fish. Alam ba ninyo ‘yon? Masarap daw, di ba?” she told participants in the forum.
