Alcala’s new image of the Pinoy farmer
Smiling and awash with cash.
This, according to Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, is how he wants the new Filipino farmer to look like.
Alcala talked to some 3,000 farmers, fishermen, and farmers/irrigators associations in a forum in Cavite last April 8 to act on their concerns.
“Nandito po ako para makinig sa inyong mga problema, gusto ko po kasing baguhin ang imahe ng mga magsasaka, na dati nakasuot ng long sleeve, nakasakay sa kalabaw, ang gusto ko po ang mga magsasaka ngayon ay nakangiti, nakasakay sa traktora at umaapaw ang pera (I am here to listen to your problems because I want to change the image of the farmer, from one wearing long sleeves and riding a carabao to one who is smiling, riding on a tractor, and awash with cash),” Alcala said.
He also turned-over to the province four wheel drive tractors, rice transplanter, floating tillers, mini-threshers, shallow tube wells, municipal nursery, pump’s engine, hammer mills, cassava chipper, cassava grater, cassava tractor, cassava digger, and cassava planter.
He distributed seedlings, rice, and vegetables seed to the forum participants.
