The science department’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute will soon release a guide for healthy eating for pregnant women after finding out that 1 in four pregnant mothers nutritionally at risk.
The FNRI said its 2013 National Nutrition Survey showed that 24.8 percent of pregnant women are nutritionally at risk, of which 37.2 percent are teen mothers.
The survey revealed that those most nutritionally at risk come from the rural areas (25.2 percent), the poorest quintile (30 percent), the younger age groups in their first trimester (26.6 percent), and those living in Cagayan Valley (33.6 percent), Bicol (33 percent) and West Visayas (32.4 percent).
The Philippine Information Agency said the FNRI’s Pinggang Pinoy will guide pregnant mothers on what to eat and how much to eat per meal.
The Pinggang Pinoy is a plate-based food guide that shows the right food proportions with optimal nutrients for Filipinos.
