El Nino losses hit P9.9B: DA
Farmers have incurred losses of P9.9 billion since February 2015 due to the effects of the El Nino, Agriculture Undersecretary Emerson Palad said.
BusinessMirror quoted Palad as saying that the bulk of the losses of P6.5 billion were incurred from January to April 2 this year.
Palad said farmers incurred another P3.4 billion loss from February to December 2015.
He said the figures are still being validated.
This year, Palad said the regions that suffered the biggest losses were Region 10 with P2.46 billion, Region 6 with P1.9 billion, and Region 12 with P748 million.
He said the losses were still lower than those expected by the DA based on 1997-1998 El Niño damage levels.
He said 677,441 hectares were affected by El Niño in 1997-1998, 555,102 hectares in 2010, and 373,494 hectares from February 2015 up to April 2, 2016.
