Endangered sharks, rays sold in Cebu City market
Sharks and stingrays, which are considered endangered species, are sold at the Cebu City public market due to the absence of a local legislation banning their sale.
The Philippine News Agency reported that while officials of the city’s Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) conducted inspections in the Pasil Public Market and found out that sharks and stingrays were still sold there.
However, the vendors could only be given warnings since there was no local legislation prohibiting the sale of the endangered species.
Cebu province has an ordinance banning the sale of sharks and rays but Cebu City is out of its jurisdiction.
