Farmers become BPO managers in rural Mindanao town
MANILA, Philippines — The small, highly rural and agriculture-dependent municipality of Kapatagan in Lanao del Norte, Mindanao is probably one of the last places in the Philippines to expect business process outsourcing companies to set up shop.
But in recent years, it has been seeing more and more the likes of Nilyn Baterna, a farmer by day, and a BPO manager by night.
“Nung kabataan ko ang kinabubuhay talaga namin is farming. Nagsasaka kami kaya natuto talaga akong magsaka, mag-araro, magtanim, tapos magbantay ng bibe, magpalaki ng baboy. Halos lahat ‘yun natutunan ko sa kahirapan ng buhay namin kasi kailangan kong tumulong sa pamilya (In my youth our main livelihood was really farming. I learned how to farm, plow, plant, and to raise geese and pigs. All that I learned since I really had to help my family because of our poverty),” Baterna said.
