Large fans cool off pig, chickens in Bulacan

Piggery and poultry owners have installed large fans and cooling mats in their farms to prevent animals from dying due to the rising heat.

ABS-CBN reported that piggery farms in Bulacan installed the blowers since March and have been giving pigs extra baths to cool them off.

Some farmers reported miscarriages of sows, heat strokes, hyperventilation, and even death among their livestock.

They complained that they are going to lose money because of the cost of buying and installing blowers, plus additional water and power consumption, adding that the price of pork is very low.

Also in Bulacan, poultry raisers are joining the mercury watch and installing cooling mats and exhaust fans.

One farmer noted that more chickens have died during the ongoing El Nino. He estimated they have lost 1,400 birds.

In Pangasinan, the fish ponds in Dagupan City are taking measures to avoid a fish kill as ponds continue to dry up.

Bangus growers are reducing stocks from 10,000 to 8,000 per pen and are feeding the fish in the morning to ensure that they eat more.

Our family has a small backyard piggery in Bicol. The pig pens have wallowing ponds where pigs stay during the day to cool their bodies. It also helps to plant trees around the piggery.
