No need to import rice for now: NFA
There is no need to import rice for now because current stocks are enough and harvest is expected soon despite the effects of the El Nino, National Food Authority director Jerry Imperial said.
Imperial told ABS-CBN News that the 1.1 metric tons of rice or 22 million bags are still in NFA warehouses and are sufficient until supply from the coming harvest comes in.
ABS-CBN also quoted the Department of Agriculture as saying that the effects of El Nino are not severe even if production losses from palay, corn, other crops and livestock have reached P6.576 billion as of early April.
The DA said actual losses from palay since January so far total 225,000 metric tons as compared to the projected loss from January to June is 900,000 metric tons.
For corn, the actual loss is 199,572 metric tons since January as against the projected loss of 500,000 for January to June.
In a separate report, ABS-CBN said trucks full of rice poured from the private sector to the hungry farmer families of Kidapawan City.
The report quoted North Cotabato Gov. Emmylou Mendoza as saying that the provincial government has already distributed its relief assistance to the affected families.
