Organic agriculture is PH ‘ace’ in Asean: Villar
Sen. Cynthia Villar said the Philippine government should strengthen organic agriculture, which gives it an edge over other Asean countries.
Villar said the country should use its expertise in organic agriculture especially now that regional integration under the Asean Economic Community (AEC), which also brings opportunities, has started.
She said the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 (RA 10068) prohibits that at least five percent of Philippine agricultural farms will be converted into organic this year.
She said the Philippines ranks fourth among Asian countries in terms of land devoted to organic agriculture.
She urged farmers to produce their own organic fertilizers and pesticides as the inorganic ones are expensive.
Villar said organic fertilizer can be made using kitchen and garden wastes using rotary composting and vermicomposting.
