Take charge of El Niño measures, Chiz tells Aquino
Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero called on President Aquino to take care of the El Niño mitigation efforts in the last three months of his administration to avoid a repeat of the violent dispersal of hungry farmers in Kidapawan City.
This, Escudero said, as more provinces are placed under a state of calamity, and farmers continue to lose their harvests and go hungry.
“President Aquino should now step in with a clearer message as more and more provinces declare a state of calamity because of the debilitating effects of El Niño. People are going hungry, and there’s no knowing what hunger will drive them to do,” he said.
Escudero said Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala should disclose where the budget for El Niño mitigation measures went.
“The public deserves more than a complete accounting of the entire DA funds. That’s why we’re now asking no less than President Aquino to take charge this time as the El Niño continues to kill farm lands,” he said.
