16,000 Davao farmers suffer from El Nino’s effects
Some 16,000 farmers from Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental were greatly affected by the long dry spell caused by El Nino.
The Philippine Information Agency Regional Watch said the office of the National Economic and Development Authority in Region 11 reported that the losses in the two province in terms of rice, corn, cacao, coffee, and banana production have reached P150 million.
Most of the drought and dry spell affected provinces in Mindanao, with farmers from Koronadal and Kidapawan cities resorting to marching in protest in order to get rice aid.
Farm output for the first quarter has dropped by 4.5 percent due to the heat and the long El Nino.
A Catholic bishop based in Mindanao has asked for help from presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte for help in releasing funds for the relief of those affected by the droughts and dry spells.
