23-year-old quit job to pursue dream Harry Potter Café
Nicole Guanio, the 23-year-old owner of Harry Potter themed Café, The Nook, did not need any spells to finally pursue entrepreneurship, and quit her day job as a banker.
“My past jobs were good but I had no motivation, other than to earn. I was serious about my dream café.” Guanio said in an interview with Cosmopolitan Philipppines. Through the help of her businessman father, she invested an initial capital of Php450, 000 to put her dream business into life, which started operating in 2015.
Inspired by her love for books, she initially wanted to put up a café where people can comfortably read. However, she said that it has been a common concept already, and came up with a different and unique idea. She planned a trip to Japan and sought inspiration from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park in Osaka.
During the early phase of starting the business, her primary goal was to minimize cost. She sought help from their house helper as her first full time employee, her cousin as one of the baristas and a couple of friends who extended help.
She was thankful to have her dad’s support, but she also aspires to be financially independent. “Before I resigned from my full-time job, I really held on to my last paychecks. Instead of eating out, I brought my own lunch. I stopped riding taxis. I didn’t waste money on expensive coffee. I avoided buying new clothes.” Guanio said.
Her advice to people wanting to quit the corporate world? –“Do as much as you can while you’re still working.” The young entrepreneur said when she was still employed, she did her research on the concept and on potential suppliers during her spare time. She also did a lot of window shopping for equipment and attended workshops during weekends.
