Military aircraft tapped for use in cloud seeding
The Department of Agriculture and the Department of National Defense signed last May 2 a memorandum of agreement (MOA) allowing the use of military aircraft for cloud seeding operations.
The MOA took effect immediately.
Prior to the agreement, the DA’s Bureau of Soils and Water Management deployed contracted aircraft to seed clouds to produce rain in identified vulnerable agricultural areas and watersheds to minimize the impact of El Niño on farm lands.
The DA’s hired aircraft have clocked 352 flying hours in 18 provinces, mostly in Mindanao and northern Luzon, with a success rate of 68 percent.
The DA also allocated P370.08 million from its quick response fund to the affected regions.
