7 Biggest winners in farm sector
Cabbage farmers were the biggest winners in the farming sector in the first quarter of the year as farm gate prices of cabbage soared by 82 percent to P32.1 per kilogram from just P20.3 per kilo in the same period last year.
According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, the decline in the volume of cabbage production pushed prices up.
The PSA said farm gate prices of banana, mango, calamansi, eggplant, tomato and onion also went up because of lower production.
In terms of increases in farm gate prices, onion farmers were also big winners in the first quarter, with onion prices jumping by 58.6 percent to P32.1 per kilo from P20.3 per kilo in the same period last year.
Tomato farmers were the third biggest winner, with farm gate prices of tomato rising by 41.4 percent to P14.5 per kilo from P10.3 per kilo, followed by calamansi farmers, with farm gate prices of calamansi increasing by 35.8 percent to P26.3 per kilo from P19. 4 per kilo.
Eggplant farmers were the fifth biggest winners as farm gate prices of eggplant rose by 25.9 percent to P21.2 per kilo from P16.8 per kilo, followed by mango farmers with farm gate prices of mango increasing by 23.7 percent to P37.8 per kilo from P30.55 per kilo.
Abaca farmers were a close seventh, with abaca prices going up by 22.9 percent to P53.6 per kilo from P43.6 per kilo. Higher buying prices from traders pushed abaca prices up during the period, the same reason behind the increase in prices of sugarcane and tobacco. (By: Eileen A. Mencias)
