Banana harvest down 4% in Q1
Harvest of bananas in the country dropped by four percent in the first quarter which the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics blamed on the long dry spell in Davao and SOCCSKSARGEN.
According to BAS data, banana production decreased to 2.05 million metric tons in the first three months of the year from 2.14 million metric tons in the same period in 2015.
The BAS said “output from banana farms decreased by 4.10 percent as smaller bunches were harvested because of the long dry spell in Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN.”
Lower production, however, pushed up banana prices during the period by seven percent to P15.74 per kilo on the farm gate level.
Lower production and smaller fruits can also be blamed for the 16-percent drop in banana exports during the period to $137.2 million from $163.7 million in the same period last year. (Eileen A. Mencias)
