DA gives away more water pumps to parched farms

The Department of Agriculture is distributing 100 water pumps sets to farmers in Kalinga province who are affected by the receding irrigation water level due to the El Nino.

Farmers had to miss cropping last year because the Upper Chico River Irrigation System (UCRIS) had to be rehabilitated and the El Nino further lowered water supply.

The agriculture department has resorted to giving away water pumps because irrigation systems have started drying up with still more than a month to go before El Nino dissipates.

Droughts and dry spells are worse up north and down south, where the temperature is higher.

The Philippine Statistics Authority said the El Nino has lowered agricultural output in the first quarter, especially in terms of rice and corn.

However, it was a boon for coffee, cacao, some fruits and other high-value crops.
