Duterte administration wants rice sufficiency in 2 yrs
The incoming administration of presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte seeks to make the Philippines self-sufficient in rice in two years.
Peter Lavina, Duterte’s spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying that the goal will be reached by developing idle lands, giving more support to the agriculture sector, and modernizing it.
Lavina said government will continue to import until the shortfall in rice production is plugged.
He also said the plan to import 500,000 tons of rice to beef up reserves will be reviewed to ensure transparency in transactions.
He also said the Philippines will take to major rice-producing countries about supply.
