Duterte’s order to new agri chief: Affordable and available food, no corruption in DA
After being named incoming agriculture secretary, former North Cotabato Gov. Emmanuel Piñol said presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte ordered him to make food available and affordable and to ensure there is no corruption in the Department of Agriculture.
Piñol said the realization and the daunting task ahead took some time to sink in.
He said he was only asked by Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano to join a group from Cavite in saying “Hi” to Duterte.
He said when the group was about to leave, Duterte asked him to join former Pampanga Rep. Andrea Domingo in standing beside him.
Duterte then appointed Domingo as incoming chairwoman of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.
Duterte added: “And meet the new Secretary of Agriculture, former Governor Manny Piñol.”
Piñol said he did not lobby for the position but he will not deny that the appointment made him happy.
He said the task would enable him to produce more food for Filipinos and improve the lives of farmers.
“The task is gargantuan. It is not going to be easy to produce food for 105 million Filipinos,” he said.
He said the job comes with the sacrifice of leaving his own farm, and not having to see his chickens and plants every day.
But he said food security will be worth it.
He said he will meet today with representatives of the United Nations World Food Programme.
Afterwards, he said he will “silently move around the country to get the feel of the situation so that on Day One, the change that Presidente Rody promised with start.”
