Negros Occidental wants to be leader in carabao production
Negros Occidental is drafting a five-year animal development plan, which includes overtaking Leyte as number one in carabao production.
Negros Occidental is second in terms of carabao production and first in raising backyard swine, free-range or native chicken, goat, sheep, and game fowl.
The Philippine News Agency, quoting Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena, reported that the plan focuses on development strategies in terms of marketing and production methodologies specialized for each type of commodity.
Negros Occidental produces 15 to 17 percent of the 103,000 total population of carabaos in the country. Leyte is ahead by only 2,000 heads. Isabela is third.
Decena said the roadmap will also concentrate on developing methodologies for the production of other kinds of chicken, cattle for dairy and meat production, peking duck breeding, and strengthening of bull dispersal through artificial insemination projects.
