Patani, ikaw na!
The lowly “patani” (lima bean) will no longer be just the vegetable after “sitaw” and “bataw,” in the song “Bahay Kubo” (nipa hut).
This after a group of student-researchers from the City of Batac National High School (CBNHS) discovered that the leaves of the patani are effective in keeping palay grains safe from weevils (“bukbok”) when used as base cover the storage container.
The Philippine Information Agency, quoting the students’ adviser Thelma Ruguian, said the patani’s leaves contain an acid component that discourage the pest from attacking the palay.
The weevil is one of the most dangerous and prevalent pests that damages crops.
Ruguian said lining palay containers with patani leaves is also a natural and environment-friendly pesticide.
