Pinoy faves lechon, sisig and chicharon top list of unhealthiest foods
All time Pinoy favorites lechon, chicharon and organ innards are among the top 3 unhealthiest foods, said Dr. Willie Ong in a publication.
Lechon, chicharon and organ innards commonly sold as street foods, were named as top 3 in Ong’s list of unhealthiest foods, respectively. All these popular Pinoy dishes pose common attributes –high cholesterol and fats, which are very detrimental to health.
Organ innards like brain tissue, stomach, lungs, kidneys, liver and heart are often grilled and sold in the streets, or used as ingredients to sisig. Apart from high cholesterol and fat content, these are also high in uric acid. These types of food are also considered as cause of bowel cancer. “Pork intestines are the organs where the animal’s waste and toxic products are stored. So why should we eat it?” Ong commented.
Second on the list would be the Pinoy favorite crunchy and tasty chicharon. Although a lot of people enjoy munching on chicharon with vinegar, the unnatural oil can cause blockage of arteries and thereby increase risk for heart attack. These are also made from intestines, which adds up to its unhealthy component.
Lechon, the star of Filipino gatherings and feasts, tops the list. Apart from the high fat and calorie content of lechon, pata tim, crispy pata, and other similar pork variants, these dishes may also pose higher risk of cancer.
Ong also warns about too much intake of preserved food like bacon, hot dogs, cold cuts and smoked foods.
