Rules to save coffee trees being drafted
A joint administrative circular is being drafted by the agriculture, environment and interior departments to conserve fruit-bearing coffee trees.
Under the draft JAC, cutting of trees will be prohibited unless it passes the protocols set by authorities.
A 4.04 percent decline in coffee production in 2014 was attributed to the rampant cutting and pruning of old trees. Last year, coffee output declined by 4.12 percent.
New coffee trees are also being planted, with particular attention given to the popularity of specialty coffee and raising the standards of coffee farming and processing.
Government is also more optimistic considering that the number of bearing trees in Sultan Kudarat, Surigao del Sur and Maguindanao have been growing.
