Tour them in farms, not in malls
Sen. Cynthia Villar expressed concern about the country’s aging farmers and how to entice the youth into the agriculture sector.
“We need to get the youth excited and interested on agriculture. Let us not scare them that agriculture is only about tilling the soil. Let us change the concept of agriculture,” Villar said.
Villar, chairwoman of the Senate committee on agriculture and food, recommended that school field trips include farm tourism destinations.
“Hopefully, their exposure to farm life – such as fruits and vegetable picking and planting, caring of farm animals, and orientation on healthy eating habits will not only guide them in leading a healthy lifestyle, but also appreciate farming enough that they will consider a career in agriculture,” she said.
She said the Philippines, with its abundant natural resources, could be a leader in farm tourism.
A Farm Tourism Bill is waiting to be signed into law by President Aquino.
