DA-7 guarantees adequate pesticide supply

It appears that Central Visayas is now all set to combat pest attacks in the coming months.

The Central Visayas unit of the Department of Agriculture (DA-7) guaranteed enough stocks of pesticides for all the local government units in the region, as preventive measure for further insect attacks, Inquirer reported.

Regional Crop Protection Center Chief of DA-7, Bienvenido Acabal Jr., said last June 28, during the Kapihan sa PIA forum held at the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. that there were accessible pesticide buffers for all LGUs to fight pests that might attack their crops.

Pesticide buffer pertains to a place in every area under the Central Visayas where LGUs can acquire the required pesticides.

In Cebu province for instance, the pesticide buffer is situated at the Provincial Agriculture Technology Coordinating Office (PATCO) in the DA-7 compound, the report said.

Acabal also mentioned that each LGU has a rice or corn crop technician who is required to conduct investigation on a farmer’s claim of a pest attack. The technician will then present the report to PATCO before the LGU can obtain the pest chemicals.

The project has been rolled out in previous years, but Acabal said that for this year, instead of employing a centralized arrangement, they positioned it in every province which incldues Negros Oriental, now part of Negros Island Region, and was formerly under the Central Visayas region.

“We did not neglect Negros since they still need our assistance,” Acabal said in Cebuano.

Acabal also accentuated the various training projects they spearheaded since last year to develop farmers’ familiarity in fighting crop pests, including army black bugs, worms, rodents and locusts.

He also directed the farmers not to wait for an actual pest attack on their crops before taking any preventive action, the report said.

“They must check the adjacent land first for presence of any pests. Usually, in the weedy portion of the land,” he said.
