Dagupan fishpond owners battle pesky ‘Tilapiang Gloria’

Dagupan City milkfish growers are resorting to poisoning the Tilapiang Gloria, which are eating the food of their prized bangus.

A tweet on ABS-CBN showed sacks full of the poisoned tilapia variety which were named after former president Gloria Arroyo, for its small stature and a black mole on its chin.

The Tilapiang Gloria is considered a pest in Dagupan City’s ponds. It also does not give much income to fish farmers because of its very low price, unlike the bangus.

The Tilapiang Gloria first appeared in fish ponds in Pangasinan years ago and is now invading bangus ponds.

Poisoning using chemicals seems to have little effect because they continue multiply.

Pangasinan fishpond owners have been advised on different ways to get rid of Tilapiang Gloria, including raising sea bass which is its natural enemy.
