Big fishpens in Laguna Lake to be dismantled
Environment Secretary Regina Lopez said she will order the dismantling of big fishpens in Laguna Lake and allow small fishermen to have a crack at rearing fish in the lake.
The Philippine News Agency reported that as of June 30, 2016, there are 357 registered and unregistered fishpen owners operating at Laguna de Bay, and 20 percent of the 90,000-hectare lake surface of the Laguna Lake is now covered by entitlements granted to private corporations or individuals to manage and develop fish pens.
President Duterte has promised to transform Laguna Lake by addressing watershed destruction, land conversion and pollution.
Duterte, in his State of the Nation Address, said he saw the inequality between large corporations and small fishermen while viewing Laguna Lake from a plane bound for Davao City.
