Banana industry council and research center, coming soon in Mindanao
Get ready, Philippines, the local banana industry is about to get real!
A law will ensure the formation of a National Banana Industry Council is required to further lift the banana industry in the Philippines, Manila Bulletin reported.
Edwin Sotto, executive director of the Philippine Exporters Confereration, Inc. in Davao region (Philexport-11) said that together with with the establishment of the banana council is the formation of a banana research center that will be situated in Mindanao.
“We have laws, councils and research centers created for other major crops in the country but there is nothing on the banana industry,” said Sotto.
Banana, being a major export commodity in the country, along with other crops including pineapple, greatly brings in dollars into the country, Manila Bulletin said.
He also added that call for the formation of a banana industry council and research center will both be part of the legislative program in the upcoming Banana Congress 2016 scheduled on October 6-8, 2016 at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City.
President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to take part in the event, while DA Secretary Emmanuel Piñol will be among the guest speakers during the three-day event.
