Berna Romulo-Puyat shows pineapples aren’t just for eating
There is no question about the health benefits of eating pineapple or drinking its juice and that it’s fibers are woven into the most intricate of barong tagalogs but that’s not all it’s good for.
Agriculture Undersecretary Berna Romulo-Puyat shows that its fibers are strong enough to be put in rubber shoes.
Berna shows off a prototype of a shoe from PUMA that uses fiber from pineapple leaves.
“Our farmers from Camarine Norte are now earning more since they are now selling the leaves which they normally throw away,” Berna says.
“Pretty soon, you will find bags and car seats of luxury cars using material made from pineapple leaf fibers from the Philippines,” she adds.
Among the luxury car makers looking to use piñatex, or pineapple fiber, are Jaguar, Porsche, and BMW, Berna says.
