Bukidnon farmers demand rice from DSWD
After participating in a rally along with militant groups to express support for President Duterte’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 25, thousands of farmers marched to the DSWD Region X regional office in Cagayan de Oro to demand rice, ABS-CBN News reported.
The farmers from Bukidnon were asking for three sacks of rice each, for their families.
The farmers said that the after-effects of El Niño is still prevalent since they cannot harvest their crops, yet. They said their families are now experiencing famine because of this.
Rebecca Pacquiao, a representative of the farmers, said in the report that DSWD Region X authorities told them they could only provide all of them at least 74 sacks of rice.
The group, however, declined the offer, saying that the 74 sacks of ricewould not suffice. The farmers decided to stay and camp outside the DSWD office until their requests are granted.
Authorities from Cagayan de Oro police office are now deployed to the area to monitor and alleviate violence from happening.
