Coconut exporters told to climb value chain with ‘virgin’ products

“The more organic the product, the better price it will get in the market,” said DTI-Export Marketing Bureau Director Senen M. Perlada.

In a forum with the media, Mr. Perlada said the value of virgin coconut oil (VCO) actually depreciates when it undergoes excessive processing.

“Western people are now going loco over coco, [especially with] VCO. They are finding all sorts of applications for VCO. [But] VCO is not a value-added [product] in the traditional way that you define value-added through processing,” he said.
