Davao City fosters local tourism through ‘Fruit Market’
Apart from being the new President’s hometown, Davao City is also currently generating buzz for its local products.
‘Asia’s fruit basket’ Davao City has strengthened its claim as the home of the largest fruit market in Asia, with the recent launching of the Asian Fruit Market in Mindanao on Saturday, June 25 at the Fountain Area of Abreeza Ayala Mall.
Davao’s bid to be the biggest fruit market in Asia in a decade is one step closer following the launch of the Asian Fruit Market in the city, Sun Star reported.
“We are positioning Davao City, and Davao Region as a whole as the main Asian Fruit Market wherein tourists from all over the world can visit Davao and taste the exotic foods and fruits Asia can offer,” said Department of Tourism (DOT)-Davao regional director Roberto Alabado III at the sidelines of the event, Saturday afternoon.
In partnership with Accendo Commercial Corp., the owner of the mall to lease for free the area for a year, DOT is the agency who spearheaded the project, through its Tourism Infrastructure Enterprise Authority (Tieza).
The department funded the structure of the marketplace with designated areas for fresh fruits, processed and value-added products and one common dining sections to create a communal place for tourists in the city, all year round.
“After this, we hope for a more permanent set up for our fruit market by next year,” Alabado said in the report, adding that the current market will function as a prototype for a long-term plan.
