Deprived of Scarborough, new jobs sought for Zambales fishermen
The Zambales provincial government is looking for livelihood projects for fishermen in Masinloc town to prevent them from risking their lives by fishing near the Scarborough Shoal, which is still controlled by the Chinese.
Zambales Gov. Amor Deloso and Masinloc mayor Arsena Lim told separate radio interviews late Thursday night that the fishermen need other sources of income.
Lim said several fishermen ventured near the Scarborough Shoal Thursday thinking that they would be allowed to catch fish following the ruling of the UN Permanent Court of Arbitration that China has no historical right in the South China Sea and that it violated the Philippines’ sovereign rights by blocking fishing activities.
Lim said the Filipino fishermen were driven away by the Chinese who occupied the shoal.
