DOST Food Innovation Centers, coming soon in PH
The Negros Island Region unit of the Department of Science and Technology said that DOST will raise Food Innovation Centers, in all regions of the country said Regional Director Rowen Gelonga said in a statement.
Visayan Star reported that the DOST came up with the facility with specific equipment to develop new food products, a government press release said Monday, July 18.
Gelonga said that in the Philippines, food products for the past few years have almost remained the same.
“With the establishment of the food innovation center we hope to come up with new products,” he said in the report.
The FIC for Western Visayas is located in Guimaras, he said.
Four other FICs are situated in regions 2,8,11 and 10.
Since the NIR was relatively new, he estimates it may take about two years before an FIC can be put up in the island.
One of the foremost concerns the department is putting focus on food production is the improvement of product packaging, the press release also said.
Gelonga explained that the enhancement of packaging is not only for aesthetics to entice buyers but also to safeguard the product, prolong product life and improve consumer protection.
