DTI, to provide assistance to kakanin producers
A giant facility to extend food shelf life is coming to Negros soon!
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) spearheaded the inauguration of a multi-million peso agri facility that will prolong the shelf life of agricultural products and processed foods, and improve the income of producers, Manila Bulletin reported.
This facility that’s one of its kind in Negros Island Region (NIR), was introduced and inaugurated Tuesday by DTI Region 7 and Mr. Aster Caberte, the Region 18 regional director, along with University officials led by Dr. Mira Sinco and officers from the Department of Agriculture, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the Department of Science and Technology from both Regions 7 and 18.
The project is named Food Development Center or the Shared Service Facility (SSF), costing a total of P6 million and situated inside the Foundation University campus in Dumaguete City, Manila Bulletin said.
The DTI will allow micro, small, and medium enterprises all over the region to avail of the services of the facility, to extend the reach of the services for local manufacturers. These include fish, dairy products, and marine goods, and ready-to-eat snacks including “budbud cabog,” a local delicacy.
The retort packaging technology will allow the popular “budbud cabog” and “budbud” in Tanjay to enter the export market without freezing required, the report said.
The project is also beneficial during calamities, when emergency food supplies can be directly sourced out from the facility.
