Harvest ginger fresh from a toilet bowl

Advocates of container gardening have shown us how to plant vegetables and herbs in mugs, basins, plastic containers, bamboo nodules, sacks, drums, and even old boots.

But the students of Barrio Obrero Elementary School in Iloilo City use even less conventional containers.

ABS-CBN reported that the school plants herbs in discarded washing machines, eggplant in cold computer monitors and ginger from old toilet bowls.

The school’s Gulayan sa Paaralan teaches students to recycle while organically growing mint, basil, lettuce, oregano and white eggplant, among others.

Dr. Gracia Malazarte, the school principal, said the school uses the vegetables and herbs for its feeding program.
