Maximizing energy from the chocolate tree

Aside from helping rehabilitate senile cacao trees in Mindanao, the science department is also trying to find uses for the waste product – the pod husks – during the chocolate-making process.

The Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech) is pilot testing the conversion of cacao pod husks into briquettes as potential source of alternative energy.

The financial viability of cacao pod briquettes is also being assessed.

The technology, aside from the propagation of high-yielding cacao varieties, will be featured during the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) on July 25-29.
