New BFAR chief vows end to illegal fishing
Eduardo Gongona, the new national director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, vowed to intensify the enforcement of fishery laws and eradicate illegal fishing in order to raise production and the income of fisherfolk.
“Food security is one of the utmost priorities of the present administration and we will ensure that this will be attained in the fishery sector,” Gongona was quoted by the Philippine Information Agency as saying.
“In order to realize this goal, however, we should intensify our efforts to enforce our fishery laws and eradicate illegal fishing, so that the very source of livelihood of our fisherfolk is protected and our fisheries production sustained,” he said.
Gongona, a retired Coast Guard Commodore, said his focus on improving resource protection would hopefully improve the plight of the country’s more than 1.7 million fisherfolk.
