New NFA warehouses built like fortresses
The National Food Authority recently inaugurated its second fortress-like storage facility that could withstand an intensity 8 quake and a typhoon with 350-kph winds.
The Philippine Information Agency reported that the second 100,000 cavan-capacity warehouse is located in Bgy. San Pablo in Ormoc City. It is also safe from flood because it was built with a one-meter podium-type elevation from the ground.
The warehouse cost P37.923 million. It can also serve as an evacuation center.
The first climate-resilient NFA warehouse was inaugurated in Masbate. It has a capacity of 50,000 cavans.
Constructing such warehouses was thought of after NFA suffered from the effects of typhoon Yolanda in 2013, particularly in Eastern Visayas.
More climate-resilient warehouses will be built to keep rice stocks safe during calamities.
