Check out PhilRice’s hand tractor gadget which will make farming easier
The Philippine Rice Research Institute has developed a hand tractor attachment that will cut down the land preparation time for farmers.
PhilRice said some 19 percent of the labor cost in rice production is in land preparation and the three-disc plow attachment it developed will make land preparation less labor intensive and more economical for farmers.
At present, most farmers use a two-disc plow attachment. By simply increasing the discs, PhilRice Engineer Elmer Bautista said the plowing capacity is immediately increased.
PhilRice tested the new plow at its central experimental station in the Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija.
The three-disc plow was attached to a hand tractor with an 8-horsepower engine. The PhilRice study showed that the field efficiency of the plow was at 94.2 percent.
At present, land preparation costs farmers P4,500 per hectare. With the three-disc plow, farmers can earn an annual net income of P72,662.40, over 50 percent more than the net income of P46,513.20 using the more common two-disc plow.
PhilRice is currently looking for an accredited manufacturer that can mass produce the plow attachment and make it commercially available for farmers.
“We are taking the necessary steps for the accreditation of our patented design of the 3-disc plow attachment so that our farmers can use it as soon as possible,” Bautista said.
